Embodied Actor: Advanced Scene Study

@ T. Schreiber Studio NYC Tuesdays 2-6pm This scene study class is ideal for advanced theatre actors. We use scenes from great modern and classical plays, and we explore an embodied approach that draws on a variety of psycho-physical methods including Chekhov, Grotowski, Lecoq, Alli, Viewpoints, Suzuki, and more. Acting on stage is ideally a state of embodied dreaming: being fully awake in your body and dreaming the space at the same time. These ongoing classes are an ongoing exploration of psycho-physical tools for actors. Each class starts with 30 minutes or so of exercises to explore body, voice, text, and partnership in space. The first class students bring in a monologue or scene they'd like to work on with a reader. Often, scenes will be handed out for cold reading in the second half of the first week's session. Weeks 2-4, students explore their assigned scene and various acting tools in depth. Most scenes are from contemporary theatre, though we sometimes do classics. Each day, we start with breath and movement work that will connect us to a high quality of presence and receptivity. Then we explore embodied acting techniques as applied to scenes and monologues from great plays. Finally, we end with some goal setting exercises that will help you clarify your artistic and professional milestones for 2025. In these classes, you will develop in three ways: personally, artistically, and professionally: you will deepen your authentic self so you have more to give to the work, evolve your technical skills through targeted scene study, and refine your professional strategies to get your work into the world. You will leave with plenty of inspiration and ideas to keep you going week to week. Join us! |
