Friday Movement Lab
This is an invite only group that trains most Fridays, usually from 2-5 ish at the Abrons Arts Center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, although exact time and location sometimes changes. It is okay to arrive late or leave early, though preferred if you didn't.
We have been exploring various psycho-physical training methods for actors and theatre makers.
We have been exploring various psycho-physical training methods for actors and theatre makers.
The approach is integrative and methods are drawn from Viewpoints, Grotowski, Chekhov, Lecoq, and a smattering of other techniques such as tuning scores, breathwork and voice work, 5 rhythms, clowning, masks, mime, puppetry, group singing and ritual song, improvisation, percussion, and more.
We also use these techniques to explore various texts. Sometimes we work with text from traditional plays, sometimes we work with more abstract texts, or we devise original material based on various themes.

The group is usually led by me, James Wagner, but sometimes we rotate leadership of exercises - allowing other members of the group to explore their ideas and share their expertise.
The last objective of the group is to explore developing and potentially performing work as a company. This fall, we are primarily exploring the text "Tongues" by Sam Shepard, with an eye to possibly doing some public performances of the piece in early December 2026.

Here is a copy of the text we are working on. If you come work with us, please read the text and pick a section to memorize and bring to the first session.

Currently, I'm asking everyone to contribute $10 per week to sustain the work, but no one is turned away for lack of funds. If you want to work and are willing to show up and throw yourself in, you are welcome.
