The Artist's Way For Actors
Maybe you've had "The Artist's Way" on your shelf for years but never completed it, or maybe it was recently recommended and you've been looking for a group to do it with. Perhaps you want to revitalize your creative spirit because life got so busy that you just can't hear your muse anymore. Whatever the case, this is your chance to explore this work with the help of an expert guide and a dedicated group of fellow actors.
This 12-week online process will support your journey through the "The Artist's Way" curriculum and help you integrate it into your life as an actor.
This group meets in a virtual classroom every Saturday morning for 90 minutes. Each session is recorded, so if you miss a week or want to review a session, you can watch the recording. Also, you will benefit from a private Facebook or WhatsApp group and phone/email contact with your group members for support and connection between sessions.

YOUR FACILITATOR: James Wagner MFA, PhD
I've been helping actors go through The Artist's Way for 4 years now. In general, I help actors on a spiritual path find practical ways to integrate spiritual tools into their work. If you want to feel more connected to your artistic calling and more aligned in your business, I can give you cool ideas, innovative practices, and reliable support as you navigate toward more artistic depth and meaningful success.
I have been teaching and coaching for almost two decades. I did a BFA in Acting at UC Santa Barbara then spent a period of time on a spiritual journey working for the likes of Tony Robbins and Ken Wilber. My life and work was forever impacted by that time, but the work I did with them clarified my purpose as an actor and lead me back to school.
I completed my MFA at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. After graduation, I acted professionally in the Bay Area at places like ACT, The Magic Theatre, San Jose Rep, Aurora Theatre, Marin Theatre Company and others. During that same time, I started teaching at The Berkeley Rep School of Theatre and ACT while doing PhD research at the California Institute of Integral Studies (funded by The Esalen Institute) in which I explored integrative and spiritual approaches to actor training.
Ten years ago, I moved to Los Angeles to continue to pursue work in theatre, film, and television. Since then, I have continued to teach at The American Conservatory Theatre, Berkeley Rep, and privately in Los Angeles. I have developed an integrative approach to actor training: using mind, body, and spirit to work towards personal, artistic, and professional growth.

TESTIMONIALS

The Artist's Way group was an incubator for artistic exploration; it gave me relaxed accountability, a fresh way of connecting with my art, and an intimate community of mutual support. The exercises were valuable, but sharing about them with fellow actors was almost more valuable. Each week, I surprised myself: stumbling on deeper revelations as I reflected on the week's tasks. Most of all, I loved that the quality of listening was exceptional: I didn't feel I needed to coach or fix or teach. I just needed to listen deeply - to myself and others. - Laura Jane Bailey, Actor

Doing The Artist's Way for Actors with James made an undeniable difference in my life. I am a creative being, so weekly accountability helps a lot, but most importantly it helped me clarify the life I want to lead - what appeals to me, what my strengths are, and what might be blocking my path and preventing creative action. I really appreciated doing the work with a group of actors because they were familiar with the challenges I face daily, yet everyone had a distinct path, leading to exciting insights. Now, a year after doing the group, I feel the momentum. I am even more empowered to live my life as an artist: to make daily choices that nurture my desires and feed my spirit and my art. I can hear my own voice now; I let it come out in whatever shape it wishes to take form, I trust my nature to guide me, and I can seek support and go towards what feels good.
- Indigo Jackson, Actor
Doing the Artist's Way in this group format helped me dive deep into not just my creative blocks, but also the root of their existence. James does a great job of holding the space and keeping a steady flow, while also fostering fellowship among group members on their quest for healing and creative fulfillment. - Feras Khagani, Painter
