GIL LAZIER

Dr Gil Lazier is an expert on actor training and philosophy. He is a devotee of Siddha Yoga and applies its principles to his theatrical work. He completed a BA and MA in Theatre at the University of Pittsburgh (1961 and 1963 respectively) and a PhD in theatre from Southern Illinois University in 1965.

Dr. GIL LAZIER has directed over 80 productions in the US and abroad including Neil Simon's I Ought to Be in Pictures in Russian (10-year run in Moscow) starring Oleg Tabakov (former director of the Moscow Art Theatre School and leading actor of the Moscow Art Theatre). Regional professional and university productions include masterworks by Albee, Brecht, Chekhov, Coward, Ibsen, O'Neill, Pinter, Shakespeare, Sophocles and Williams, and recent plays by Ayckbourn, Blessing, Butterworth, Durang, Letts, McPherson, Reza, Stoppard and others. Premieres: Unrequited (Clifton Campbell), The Conservationist (Mark Wheatley), and Paloma (Anne Garcia-Romero). English-language premieres: The Roof and The Competition (Alexander Galin). Positions include Florida State University Theatre Dean (1982-99), President of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (1991-93), Asolo Conservatory Director (2001-2004), Asolo Rep Associate Artistic Director (2001-2004), Banyan Theater Artistic Director (2005-2007), Dean of the College of Fellows of the American Theatre (2007-2008). Gil Lazier is a stoic leaderWhen Gil Lazier welcomed audience members at FSU/Asolo Conservatory productions this season, he was always smiling, always expressing pride in his students and his program.
From his placid demeanor, you'd never have known how much stress the conservatory director has been under during the past 15 months.
…. however, Lazier, who is about to retire, says he's not demoralized. In fact, he calls his three years as the conservatory's leader the capstone of his career.
"It's been such a rewarding experience, because of the students, and because I've been able to work in this wonderful community," Lazier said
Asolo welcomes company members
The Asolo Theatre Company's first performance is nearly two months away. But an enthusiastic audience turned out Monday to welcome back some familiar actors and meet a few new ones.
At the annual Town Hall gathering, Producing Artistic Director Howard Millman introduced the Asolo company members, who begin rehearsals this week. Gil Lazier, director of the FSU/Asolo Conservatory, introduced the second-year students who will perform in the conservatory productions.

- Dean Lazier’s dedication to establishing direct ties between his School and leading teachers and artists of other countries has created a global environment for his students. He pioneered in the creation of the first articulated agreement between an American theatre education program and the Moscow Art Theatre and School. This agreement facilitated the exchange of eighty Russian and American students and twelve faculty over three years.
